I am a constituent of yours and my postcode is . I’m writing to express my concerns about the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill and to encourage you to attend the meeting on 24th April, chaired by Michael Matheson and Pam Duncan Glancy, 1.30pm, Committee Room 4.
This is an opportunity for you to listen to Alicia Duncan who has travelled from Canada to meet with MSPs and share her family experience of assisted dying. There will be space to ask questions and learn more about the issues.
Alicia Duncan’s mother, Donna, was involved in a minor car accident and, soon after, began to display signs of mental health issues and restrict her food intake. After months of physical and mental decline, and unable to be seen by her local Canadian clinic due to their waiting list, Donna applied for Medical Assistance in Dying and was approved on account of low weight and physical malnourishment. As an experienced psychiatric nurse, Donna knew exactly what to say to convince doctors and so was euthanised within days, despite the objections of her daughters that she lacked the mental capacity for the decision.
Canada passed a very similar law to the one that you are currently considering. Parliamentarians there believed that adequate safeguards were in place, but over a relatively short period of time this changed and now MAiD is available to a wide group of people.
I am very concerned that a similar situation could arise in Scotland. We have already seen during the Westminster Bills progress that safeguards such as a judge led panel have been removed from the Bill during the Committee Stage.
International evidence is clear, safeguards are eroded and the good intentions of parliament are lost.
Please do attend this meeting and listen to the powerful testimony of Alicia, and vote against his Bill in May.
