<p><p style="text-align: left;">I am writing to you as a Aberafan Maesteg constituent to ask your position on the issue of assisted suicide and euthanasia as this will be an important factor in deciding who to vote for. </p>
<div style="text-align: left;">I am opposed to legalising assisted suicide and euthanasia, believing it to be:</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>Uncontrollable:</strong> once the principle is accepted, it is subject to abuse and extension as arbitrary lines are redrawn and so-called safeguards are dismantled. This has already happened in places such as Canada, Oregon, the Netherlands and Belgium, where laws initially designed for terminally ill mentally competent adults have been extended to, non-terminally ill adults, disabled people, those with mental health problems even children. Worse still some pro-euthanasia advocates want further extensions to include homeless people, the elderly who have lived a completed life, even those who are suffering because of extreme poverty.</li>
<li><strong>Unethical</strong>: legalisation would make it a (cheap) treatment option to be routinely offered alongside others. Saying some suicides are to be prevented, and others assisted, necessarily devalues lives. The concerns of disabled people are too often ignored or batted away in this debate, which is why actress and disability rights campaigner Liz Carr’s new BBC documentary, “Better Off Dead?”, had such a profound effect on viewers: I urge you to watch this landmark hour of television (available on iPlayer here – https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001z8wc/better-off-dead ).</li>
<li><strong>Unnecessary</strong>: end-of-life suffering, and constraints on living with dignity, are often rooted in a lack of access to care and support. Sue Ryder estimates that up to nine in 10 (90 per cent) of people dying in the UK have palliative care needs but less than half (50 per cent) have access. While, our amazing hospice movement is struggling with rapidly rising costs and a drop in donations due to the cost of living crisis. Therefore, policy makers, should follow the recent Health and Social Care Committee report recommendation and focus on ensuring access to life-changing care and support.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: left;">I urge you to consider the evidence from abroad, warnings from healthcare professionals <wbr />working most closely with dying people, and concerns expressed by disability rights advocates; and to not support a change in the law.</div>
